We had quite a stir here yesterday, which unfortunately, didn't end the way we had hoped.
HERE's the story of this poor stranded doe ..
My son and his gf came home yesterday afternoon and asked if I had heard about the deer on the ice, which of course I hadn't. We headed over to where she was about 4:45 and when we got there, she was standing on this little piece of ice ...
After about half hour or so, the officers said they were sending an air boat in to see if they could coax her towards shore and asked that we all please move so she would feel safe if they could get her this way ...
She jumped in the frigid waters and they honestly did everything they could ...
At this point, she was able to hoist herself up again and we could see she had a very nasty wound on her side - there was talk she had been hit - but they turned the boat off so she could rest for a bit ...
Here she went back in the water, so they kept trying to get her to head for shore, but it just wasn't working out as planned ...
After what seemed like a very long time, was likely about half hour? It seemed like she actually swam to the boat, where we couldn't see and an officer came and very quietly told the parents that due to her injuries, they were going to have to put her down and if we had children, we may want to take them away at that point.
It was a very hard thing to understand and comprehend - where did she come from? Was she hit? What happened to her? These were all questions from the kids. Why can't they give her a chance? But my answer was that the rescuers did all they could and only they could see how bad her injuries were once they were able to get to her and unfortunately, she was just unable to be saved and it was a sad ending to a long and very valiant fight.
Thank you to those who tried to help her ...
